Bognor Regis says YES to More Smart Bins

Following the initial eight units installed in March 2023, Bognor Regis welcomes 17 more smart bins

Did you know? A smart bin from Bigbelly is the same size as a standard street bin, but it can hold up to eight times more rubbish. Yes, eight times! Thanks to a solar-powered internal compactor, our high-tech bins help keep streets cleaner, reduce overflow, and cut down the number of collections needed. Smart, right?

That’s exactly why Bognor Regis is doubling down on their commitment to cleaner, greener spaces. They recently welcomed 17 new Bigbelly bins to the town centre as part of a major push to boost cleanliness, reduce litter, and create a more welcoming environment for locals and visitors alike.

A Cleaner, Smarter Town Centre

The new bins are fully funded by Arun District Council through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, as part of a wider Wayfinding Scheme designed to improve how people move through and experience Bognor Regis. The scheme is being led by the Bognor Regis Regeneration Board, with support from Bognor BID and Arun’s District Council Cleansing Team.

This follows the successful rollout of eight Bigbelly bins in March 2023, with these additional 17 helping to expand coverage to even more parts of the town.

“We know from business and community feedback that appearance and cleanliness has a big influence on the way people feel about the town centre,” said Heather Allen, COO of Bognor Regis BID. “We’re delighted we’ve been able to work in partnership to introduce these new bins across a wider business area.”

What Makes Bigbelly Bins So Smart?

Bigbelly bins might look like your typical street bin, but inside, they’re working hard to keep streets cleaner for longer:

  • Solar-powered compactor compresses rubbish, holding 8x more than a normal bin
  • Touch-free access via foot pedals and pull handles
  • Sealed receptacles prevent litter from blowing out
  • Fire-safe cigarette compartments help reduce risk and downtime
  • Smart sensors make maintenance more efficient and less frequent

Part of a Bigger Plan

The bins are part of a larger vision for Bognor Regis making the town more accessible, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone. The Wayfinding Scheme, funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, is also focused on helping people explore the town’s key retail areas, hospitality spots, beaches, and green spaces with ease.

“Our work with stakeholders through the Town Centre Forum identified some key shared priorities for the town centre including improving both the perception of the town and the feeling of welcome,” said Rebecca White, CEO of the Bognor Regis Regeneration Board.
“It’s great to see how, when working in partnership to a shared vision, projects of all scope and scale can have a significant cumulative impact, making Bognor Regis a welcoming and colourful town for all.”

Made Possible by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund

The UK Shared Prosperity Fund, a government initiative running from 2022 to 2025 supports local authorities in funding projects that build pride in place, boost productivity, and support inclusive growth. For Bognor Regis, it’s about creating a town centre people feel good about.

We’re looking forward to our continued partnership, and a massive thank you to everyone involved in making this project happen.

“It’s fantastic to see these extra belly bins, they will make a real difference to the cleanliness of Bognor Regis. I am pleased to see the additional seventeen being installed in other parts of town too.”
