Spinningfields Gets a Smart Upgrade: Cleaner Streets, Smarter Waste Management

Spinningfields, Manchester’s bustling city centre location, has just taken a significant step towards smarter, cleaner, and more sustainable public spaces. With the introduction of 17 Bigbelly Smart Bins, the area is now equipped to handle general waste, recycling, and food waste in a way that is efficient, cleaner, and more environmentally friendly.

These aren’t just ordinary litter bins – they are fully enclosed, pest-proof, and designed to prevent wind-blown litter, keeping streets clean no matter the weather. Thoughtfully located based on footfall, weather, and events, the Bigbelly units provide real-time fullness data, enabling collection teams to optimise their routes and schedules. Since December 2024, this has resulted in an 84.3% collection efficiency and over 926 labour hours saved, all while reducing carbon emissions by up to 80%.

Pete Skelton, General Manager at Spinningfields highlights the impact: “The introduction of these smart bins has transformed how we manage public realm waste. They support our sustainability goals and have contributed to us winning the prestigious Green Flag Award in 2025.”

The project was delivered in partnership with with Greg Cutts, Adriele, and Geoff from Future Street, providing expert guidance, technical support, and hands-on assistance throughout the deployment.

Beyond the operational benefits, the bins help make Spinningfields a place the community can enjoy with pride. Cleaner streets, easier recycling, and a more sustainable city centre experience for visitors and residents alike.
