In collaboration with East Lothian Council, North Berwick has recently installed 5 Bigbelly Smart Max Stations across the Lodge and town centre. The new bins were funded by the North Berwick in Bloom group as part of a continued effort to ‘keep the town looking its best.’
This installation marks a positive step towards creating cleaner, smarter and more efficient public spaces in one of Scotland’s most popular coastal towns.
Smarter Waste Management for a Busy Town
Bigbelly Smart Max Stations are designed to improve street cleanliness while making waste collection more efficient for local authorities and maintenance teams. Equipped with solar-powered compaction technology and smart monitoring systems, the bins can hold significantly more waste than traditional street bins and notify staff when they need emptying.
Some of the key benefits for North Berwick include:
- Automated email notifications sent directly to staff when the bins are full
- Built in compaction technology allows the bin to hold up to x5 more waste than a standard bin
- Fully enclosed design helps keep litter inside and birds and pests out
With high visitor numbers throughout the year, particularly during the summer months, our Bigbelly units will help maintain cleaner streets and public spaces while supporting more sustainable waste management operations.
Adding Beauty to Functionality
A particularly unique feature of this installation is the bespoke artwork, designed and painted by volunteer Richard Evans, whose hand painted butterflies, birds and flowers add an extra element of colour and character to the streets.
The designs not only enhance the visual appeal of the bins but also reflect the North Berwick in Bloom group’s wider commitment of beautification and civic pride throughout the town.
Supporting Cleaner, Greener Communities
Future Street is proud to support councils and community groups with innovative waste management solutions that improve operational efficiency while enhancing public spaces. The North Berwick installation demonstrates how smart infrastructure can combine practicality, sustainability and community identity to deliver lasting benefits for residents and visitors alike.
