Nestled on over 850 acres of historic parkland, Margam Castle is a 19^th Century Tudor Gothic style mansion that was once home to the Talbot family. With a range of different activities on offer, from dog agility and orienteering to horse riding and walking trails, there’s something for the whole family to enjoy.

Work Smarter, Not Harder

In such a vast site that welcomes 340,000 visitors a year, having the right waste management system in place to cope with this high level of footfall is crucial for maintaining a clean and welcoming park environment. What started out with several 25-30 litre bins scattered around the park requiring collections 6 or 7 times a day, has now turned into a fleet of Bigbelly stations that are emptied every other day.

With the old system, the estates team spent their days checking bins unnecessarily, especially in the summer months, and when the bins were full it was hard to cope with the demand. Now, with our Bigbelly Smart Max stations, the increased capacity has significantly reduced the number of collections and freed up between 75-80% of the workforce to do other jobs around the estate. What’s more, is the team at Margam Park appreciate this change and has noticed a real difference since switching to Bigbelly.

Green Flag Award 2026/27

As the Green Flag Award celebrates their 30^th anniversary this year, Margam Park is also celebrating another coveted Green Flag achievement for their well-maintained park and green spaces. Under the judging criteria falls sustainability and waste management, ensuring any issues are appropriately dealt with. Thanks to the fully enclosed nature of each Bigbelly unit, waste remains inside once deposited, so wind-blown litter, pest access and scavenging is completely eliminated – allowing visitors to enjoy a well-kept estate that visibly demonstrates to the community the park is properly maintained and cared for. Margam Parks Manager Wayne Curtis tells us, “we’re having no complaints about litter in the areas”, highlighting just how much of an impact the new bins have had on the site and reinforcing the deserved Green Flag Award.
