10 Bigbelly Smart Max stations have been deployed in Bologna from Piazza Maggiore and Piazza del Nettuno to Piazza Re Enzo, in an effort to enhance the appearance and cleanliness of the city’s historic center. This is one of the first actions Bologna and Hera have introduced in order to enhance the overall cleanliness of the city.
Hera’s environmental services operatives monitor the units and thanks to Bigbelly’s smart technology, they receive alerts when the bins are full and can monitor their status, therefore reducing unnecessary collection trips and effectively managing their resources.
Improving Street Cleanliness in the City
The introduction of our Bigbelly bins comes as part of a wider project to improve cleanliness and maintenance services throughout the city – starting at the historic city centre. Other services introduced to support this project include, power washing the busiest areas of the centre, increased street sweeping and additional weekend surveillance in busy tourist and residential areas.
Further actions have also been planned to improve sustainability and environmental services while also encouraging proper behaviors in public spaces.
Bigbelly’s Role
Our Bigbelly bins play a crucial role in helping Bologna and Hera achieve their waste management and sustainability goals for several reasons:
Compactor mechanism
As waste builds up the fill level sensor triggers a compaction, crushing the rubbish within and allowing the station to hold more than double the capacity of a standard litter bin.
Remote monitoring
The bin communicates directly with the CLEAN platform and collection operatives, sending alerts when the bin is ready to collect. Each bin is also equipped with LED lights that provide fullness status at a glance.
Enclosed Design
Once waste is deposited it remains securely inside, preventing wind-blown litter and eliminating access for pests such as birds and rats.
It is great to see Bologna implementing such positive measures to create cleaner, smarter, and more efficient spaces for everyone to enjoy.
