Through the public company GESPROTUR, the Canary Islands government Department of Tourism and Employment has carried out an initiative to modernise waste management across the tourist islands.

The public project to supply 54 smart bins was officially launched on the 1st July 2026 in Cenobio de Valerón (Santa María de Guía, Gran Canaria).

Our Bigbelly bins provide different waste containment needs for the 8 locations and following each installation our team was on hand to provide training on the units use and functionality.

Ayuntamiento de Santa María de Guía

As part of this project, the municipality of Santa María de Guía installed 7 Smart Max stations in 4 locations that are strategic points of their cultural, historical and natural heritage. Our Bigbelly bins and their smart, enclosed design, will help to keep the town and its coastline litter free ensuring it remains welcoming for residents and visitors.

Ayuntamiento de Villa de Moya

Located in the northern part of Gran Canaria and with a population of just under 8,000, the municipality of Villa de Moya is one of the smallest municipalities on the island. They installed 7 Bigbelly stations in a variety of public spaces and points of interest across the municipality from the coast to peak points. With 65% of the municipality classified as a Protected Natural Area containing a wide variety of flora and fauna, our Bigbelly bins will help preserve Moya’s natural woodland and rare species, by keeping litter contained and out of sight.

Ayuntamiento de La Matanza de Acentejo

The municipality of La Matanza de Acentejo located in northeast of Tenerife, gets its name from being the location of the Battle of Acentejo back in 1494. Today, tourists can visit wineries and protected areas such as, Costa Acentejo and admire flora, fauna, and the effects on the landscape from volcanic activity. A total of 6 Bigbelly units were deployed in prominent áreas around the municipality, including the area around El Montillo natural park and the Farmer’s Market. These points reflect the historical, natural and daily identity of the municipality.

Ayuntamiento de Yaiza

Often voted as one of the prettiest villages in Spain, the municipality of Yaiza is known for its white houses, bright green gardens and volcanic views. Located in the southern part of Lanzarote, Yaiza is one of the best preserved towns in the Canary Islands and visitors appreciate the clean streets that coincide with the pristine houses. With the objective of improving waste management in the most popular areas in the south of Lanzarote, the municipality installed 7 Bigbelly bins in locations of great natural and touristic value such as C.C. La Mulata, Mirador Flamingo, Torre del águila y Playa Blanca

Ayuntamiento de Garachico

Garachico is one of the oldest villages in the Canary Islands and has a number of sustainability goals in place to encourage responsible behaviour and habits on the island. One of their ground rules is to not leave waste, including cigarette butts, lying around to attract pests. To help achieve these goals, the municipality installed 7 Bigbelly Smart Max units equipped with ashtrays, supporting cigarette butt disposal by directly using the integrated ashtray on the front door of each unit. The units are in place in two main bathing áreas due to the high number of visitors and residents they attract. They include Piscinas Naturales de El Caletón, which are pools formed from volcanic rock, and Playa del Muelle, a quiet stretch of pebbles and black sand located next to the historic harbour.

Ayuntamiento de Los Silos

The municipality of Los Silos installed 6 Bigbelly bins in areas that combine the charm of its historic centre with the natural beauty of its coastline. Renowned for its traditional streets and squares which preserve the architecture and cultural heritage of the north of the island, making Los Silos a destination that blends nature, history and tranquility. With a mix of multi-unit and multi-stream stations in place around the village, our Bigbelly stations are helping to support on-the-go recycling allowing visitors to dispose of their waste responsibly, helping protect the local environment, and reduce contamination rates.

Ayuntamiento de Santiago del Teide

Santiago del Teide is a mountain town located about 930 meters above sea level and acts as a gateway to Teide National Park. A site made popular for its black sandy beach, the marina was awarded a European blue flag for its clear waters. To preserve these advantageous conditions and support the blue flag achievement, the municipality of Santiago del Teide deployed 7 Bigbelly stations across prominent areas of the municipality, from Los Gigantes cliffs to Playa de la Arena, helping to reinforce responsable waste disposal in natural areas and popular tourist locations.

Ayuntamiento de Adeje

Costa Adeje is a cosmopolitan destination popular with many tourists offering favourable weather conditions not only in summer, but also in winter. With an array of beaches on offer, it’s clear why many people are choosing to visit and holiday in this part of the Canary Islands. From the coast to the mountains, more than 45% of the area is made up of natural protected areas where visitors can enjoy water activities, or simply admire the natural surroundings. The municipality of Adeje installed 7 Smart Max stations in key areas around the municipality, from Barranco del Infierno to tourist areas of Costa Adeje. This installation strengthens their committment to environmental sustainability in a destination that attracts large visitor numbers year after year.

These installations across the Canary Islands are a great example of how innovative technology can help create cleaner, smarter, and more efficient public spaces – benefiting, locals, tourists, and the environment.
