Following an initial trial of 14 stations in 2024 – 2026 we are delighted to announce the completion of 92 Bigbelly Smart Max stations across Dortmund. Over the last few months, our team was busy prepping and deploying all 92 stations in 14 parks across Dortmund, including Fredenbaumpark, Dortmund Zoo, Stadewäldchen and Tremoniapark.

Our Bigbelly stations are a perfect fit for these locations due to the high level of footfall they receive on a daily, and yearly basis. On busy summer days and during the upcoming festive period, our Bigbelly stations will be on hand to manage the large volume of waste accumulated in these areas and encourage responsible waste disposal.

Benefits for Dortmund

The installation of these 92 Bigbelly bins across Dortmund’s parks will offer them great benefits and results including:

Increased capacity – by crushing the waste inside, our Smart Max stations provide up to 6 times greater capacity than a standard bin – allowing more waste to de deposited before it requires emptying.

Reduced collections – the increased capacity means crews can avoid unnecessary collections, allowing them to complete other tasks and reduce CO2 emissions in the city contributing to a cleaner, smarter and more efficient city.

Real-time data – thanks to the integrated CLEAN software, staff receive automated notifications when the bins are full and can monitor their live status – helping them to track the level of waste in the bin and optimise collections.

Another great feature of these smart stations is the fully enclosed nature of each Bigbelly bin. Once waste is deposited, it remains securely inside eliminating bird and pest access and preserving the beauty of each park and the zoo. All 92 Bigbelly units are helping to keep the parks of Dortmund clean and welcoming while their operations become smarter and more efficient.

The carefully curated wrap designs have also allowed the units to blend seamlessly into the park surroundings and stand out at the same time. From dandelions and flowers to giraffe spots and zebra stripes, the units have simply become a part of their surroundings. The eye catching designed were chosen to help attract and encourage user engagement while also showcasing the local flora and fauna Dortmund has to offer.

We are delighted to see Dortmund embracing our innovative smart waste solutions to make their operations smart, efficient and more sustainable, while keeping the city and parks clean and welcoming for all residents and visitors.
