Over 120 Bigbelly bins rolled out across the borough to create cleaner, greener public spaces
It’s been a busy year at Future Street HQ, with new clients and innovative projects taking shape across the UK. One standout success? Our collaboration with Reigate & Banstead Borough Council, which saw more than 120 Bigbelly bins installed across the borough, earning a special mention on the BBC.
This large-scale rollout was funded through the Community Infrastructure Levy. The goal was clear: create cleaner, smarter, and more efficient public spaces that benefit residents, council teams, and the environment.
Why Future Street?
The council had already trialled Bigbelly bins in parks – this led to a broader investment in solar-powered, smart compacting bins across high-impact areas, reducing overflow and collection frequency while increasing control and visibility.
“The Bigbelly solution frees up our cleansing teams so they can focus more time on key tasks such as clearing fly tipping, removing graffiti and tidying up general littering. In essence, Bigbelly gives us significantly more control over waste management activities while ensuring our public spaces are cleaner and greener.”
— Sharon Quinn, Senior Manager of Neighbourhood Operations, Reigate & Banstead Borough Council
Key Benefits
- 5x more capacity than standard bins, reducing overflow
• Smarter collection scheduling, guided by real-time alerts
• Cleaner streets thanks to enclosed design and reduced litter
• Lower emissions with fewer vehicle trips
• More time for other work, like tackling fly tipping and graffiti
Adding a Local Touch
Some of the new bins can even “talk back” – a fun, community-focused feature. The council is working with local schools to record messages for the talking bins, making waste disposal more engaging for residents of all ages.
Supporting Smarter, Greener Public Spaces
The new bins were installed across town centres, replacing older units. And thanks to the Bigbelly system, the council’s environmental and financial sustainability goals are being met with real, measurable results.
Working with Reigate & Banstead Borough Council on defining their goals is already seeing great results, and happy customers.
“We are extremely pleased with how the Bigbelly solution has worked and would encourage any Councils or organisations that are looking to make their public spaces litter and pest-free and who are looking to work smarter and more sustainably to speak with the Future Street team to see how they might bring similar benefits to them.
— Sharon Quinn, Senior Manager of Neighbourhood Operations, Reigate & Banstead Borough Council
We’re proud to partner with Reigate & Banstead Borough Council on this future-forward waste solution. And we’re grateful to the Community Infrastructure Levy for funding such impactful upgrades.
